Module 1. Teaching and Learning

This is a basic course in teaching and learning at university level. The course aims to make you able to plan and carry out teaching lessons focusing on students learning. Through presentations, discussions and practical exercises you will become familiar with different teaching methods.
Target group

New teachers and others with teaching obligations.
PhD students with some teaching experience at university level. 

Learning objectives

After the course you will be able to

Identify characteristics of students’ learning and different approaches towards learning.

Describe how you can take characteristics of students’ learning into account in your own teaching.

Use variation in your own teaching to support students’ learning.

Use different means to support the active learning process of students.

Identify and use different ways so students obtain feedback about their learning.

Explain what a learning objective is.
Formulate
learning objectives for your own teaching exercise.

Give and use constructive feedback to and from colleagues as a means to improve your own teaching

Identify your most important lessons learnt with respect to student learning by participating in teaching exercises.

Practical information 

The course is held at DTU Lyngby 8-9 times a year. The course equals 2½ ECTS points. The workload for the participant is estimated to 50 hours, including preparation.

Participation in the complete course is a requirement for obtaining ECTS points. The first course day is the basis for the rest of the course and therefore, absence at the first day means that you cannot participate in the remaining course days. Partial absence during the last days of the course may – by prior agreement with the course leader – be substituted by participation in corresponding sessions in a subsequent course.

The course is given in English. Only if all participants consent, it will be held in Danish.

The course fee is DKK 5.500. The price covers teaching, teaching material, administration, supervision and meals.    
Full fee is paid if a cancellation is made later than 4 weeks before the start of a course module.

The course days run from 9 am. to 4 or 4.30 pm. The courses normally take place at DTU, Lyngby Campus.
